⚠️ Estimate only. Density-based classification is a general guide. Your specific commodity may have a designated NMFC item number that overrides density-based class. Always verify your exact class at nmfta.org or consult your freight broker before booking to avoid reclassification charges.

How Freight Class Is Calculated

Freight class is based primarily on density — the weight of your shipment divided by its cubic footage. Denser, heavier freight earns a lower (cheaper) class. Lighter, bulkier freight gets a higher (more expensive) class.

Formula: Density = Total Weight (lbs) ÷ [L × W × H (inches) ÷ 1,728]

Always measure to the outermost point of your shipment including pallet, shrink wrap, and packaging. Carriers re-measure at the terminal — inaccurate dimensions lead to reclassification charges. Read our full Freight Class Guide →
